Badrinath near Chamoli

Badrinath Yatra in Chamoli

Badrinath temple is the main tourist attraction in the town. The temple is also known as Badrinarayan temple and is devoted to Lord Vishnu. It is also the holy shrine of Vaishnavities or 108 Divya Desams. The temple was built by the Grahwal kings two centuries ago and is conical in shape. A total of 15 idols are present in the temple and all are black in color. The posture of Lord Vishnu in the temple is in meditative posture.

Tapt Kund is another attraction of the town which is a natural thermal spring on the banks of Alaknanda River. The water of the spring has medicinal properties. Neelkanth, a snow covered peak is another famous attraction of Badrinath.

The panch Prayag can also be visited from Badrinath – Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Vishnuprayag. Tourists can also visit Mana village which is known as the last village of India is located at a distance of 3kms from Badrinath. The village is inhabited by the Indo-Mongolian tribe. The ideal time to visit Badrinath or the char dham yatra is between May to October. Monsoons should be avoided as there are chances of frequent landslides in the town.

Chamoli Gopeshwar near Chamoli

Chamoli Gopeshwar is the administrative headquarters of the district of Chamoli. One can enjoy a picturesque view of Chamoli from Gopeshwar. The place is known for its ancient temples which have great religious importance. Ancient temple of Lord Shiva, Vaitarni Kund and the marvelous view of the Himalayas are the main attractions of the town. Tourists can also go on a trek to revere Rudranath temple that starts from Saggar located 5kms ahead of Gopeshwar.

Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers near Chamoli

Nanda Devi National Park was established in 1982 ans is also known as a forest reserve. The Valley of Flowers and the Nanda Devi National Park was given the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The valley of flowers is known for its alpine flowers and the rich variety of flora and fauna. Snow leopard, brown bear, Asiatic black bear, red fox, blue sheep and musk deer are few of the inhabitants of the forest which are rarely found in any other part of India.

The Valley of Flowers is located 23 km northwest of the Nanda Devi National Park, near Joshimath. The best time to visit the valley is from June to September while the rest of the months the valley remains covered by snow. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the valley in full abundance then try visit in between mid July to mid August.

Auli near Chamoli

Auli or Auli Bugyal is a hill station in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The place is located at an altitude of 2500 meters. Auli is a recently developed ski resort for the brave hearts. You can reach Auli either by hiring a private taxi or through a ropeway from Joshimath. Auli is located at a distance of 16kms from Joshimath and it offers a marvelous view of the Himalayas.  The highest peak in Auli is Trishul which is 23,490 feet tall. This snow covered destination becomes a perfect place for skiing from January till March. Winter Ski resort is another amazing spot for tourists in Auli.

Joshimath near Chamoli

Joshimath is a small town on the way to Badrinath and situated 14kms from Helang. Located at an elevation of 6,150 feet, Joshimath is an ancient rest house and praying hall which was established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Hemkund Sahib near Chamoli

Located amidst snow clad majestic Himalayan crests in Uttarakhand at a very high altitude, Hemkund Sahib is one of the holiest Gurudwaras in the country. Hemkund Sahib was named after the nearby lake Hemkund Lake.

Vasuki Tal near Chamoli

To reach Vasuki Tal, one will have to go on an 8kms trek through the Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, Bhimpul and Vasudhara Falls. These places are also a part of the Badrinath pilgrimage and have an important significance in Hindu mythology. Vasuki Tal is located at an altitude of 14,200 feet.

Tapt Kund and Surya Kund near Chamoli

Two natural hot water Sulphur Springs meet at this point that has an innate temperature of 55C. The process of reaching the place is believed to purify the body and the soul.

Dronagiri Hill/Village near Chamoli

Located at a height of 2,400 meters, Dronagiri hill is one of the major attractions for trekkers. Dronagiri is also known as Dunagiri or Doonagiri. Adventure lovers can also put up camps under the open sky and trekkers should not miss the village walks and interactions with the local people.The best time to visit for trekkers are the months of summer and spring.

Kuari Pass near Chamoli

Kuari Pass is situated in the Nanda Devi reserves 4,265 meters above sea level. It is a major trekking destination in Chamoli which is visited by large number of trekkers throughout the year. It has two trekking routes and the trekkers start from one route and end in the next route. It is a famous trekking destination among European and American trekkers. Trekkers can also extend their fun by getting involved in rock climbing and moon light trekking. There is also the option of camping on tents. This would be the most exciting experience to live under the sky and smelling the earth. Except the monsoons, all other months of the year would be an ideal time to go for a trek in Kuari Pass.

Panch Kedar near Chamoli

It is the collective name of the five abodes of Lord Shiva – Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Rudranath, Tunqnath and Kalpeshwar. These five pilgrimages are considered to be the places where five different body parts of Lord Shiva was sighted when he came into the earth at Guptakashi. Thousands of pilgrims and adventure lovers visit these holy abodes of Lord Shiva every year.

Rudranath near Chamoli

One of the Panch Kedar pilgrimages is the Rudranath Temple which is located at an altitude of 2,286 meters above sea level. The temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year from May till October during the Char Dham yatra. Rudraganga also known as Vaitarani or Baitarani flows near the Rudranath temple. One can enjoy the beautiful view of Nanda Ghunti, Nanda Devi, Trishul peak, Devasthan and Hathi parvat from the Rudranath Temple.

Kalpeshwar near Chamoli

Kalpeshwar is located at a distance of 23kms from Joshimath in the forests of Ugram Valley. The temple is dedicated to particularly worship Lord Shiva’s head and hair.

Adi Badri Dham near Chamoli

It is one of the Panch Badris which is located 16 kms away from Karnaprayag. Many temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Narayana can be sighted here. Tourists can also visit a nearby lake called Benital and forts that belonged to Garhwali Rajas and are now ruined.

Anusuya Devi & Atri Muni Ashram near Chamoli

Anusuya Devi temple is located at a distance of 29kms from Chamoli. One will have to first reach Mandal and then take a trek of 6kms to reach the temple. It is located at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. Duttatreya Jayanti is celebrated in the month of December in the temple. A fair is organized on a large scale and thousands of devotees go to visit every year. The significance of the fair is that they worship the Goddess whole night with lamps in their hand.

Atri Muni was the husband of Anusuya Devi. The Ashram is named after him which is located 2km away from the temple. The Ashram delights the visitors due to the cave form of the Ashram. It also offers a spectacular sight of Amritkund and Arnit Ganga.

The Sacred Prayags near Chamoli

The five Prayags in Garhwal called the Panch Prayags. Out of the five Prayags, three are situated in Chamoli - Karnaoravas, Nandoravae and Vishnuprayag. These are worshipped with great dedication by the locals and outsiders.
